Tips to prepare your soul for an at-home birth

Something we rarely hear about during pregnancy is the intense spiritual journey that a mother and child travel together the moment the baby is conceived. That’s why preparing your soul for birth is just as important as preparing your mind and body.

When we’re conscious of the journey, everything about this sacred rite of passage becomes easier. That includes birthing, postpartum, bonding, and physical recovery.

Here are the key practices I did to prepare my Soul:

Tuned in. I took time everyday to tune in with my body, baby and energy field. Depending on what I sensed, I would do something to bring it back into balance. Yoga, a walk, meditation, breathwork, sleep, calming supplements, chatting with my Doula/support people—whatever it was, I made it a priority.

Listened to music. I would constantly have music on from chanting to meditation hymns. When I felt called, I would sing along. It helped elevate my energy to keep it buzzing at a certain frequency which opened my heart.

Remember this: Pregnancy is all about opening and surrendering. We have to open energetically before we can open physically to welcome a baby through our bodies and into the world. This was a necessary practice.

Spotify playlists I listened to on repeat:

  1. When Women Gather

  2. Healing Ragas

  3. Aya Sacred Birth

Stretched daily. I stretched five days a week, if not more. I was always physically supporting my body to open and receive the baby. Physically making space in my body to welcome the baby worked on my energetic field to open and surrender to what was.

We store pain, memories, stress, and other heavy emotions in our muscles, particularly our hips. Daily stretching helped open them allowing energy to be released.

Here’s my favourite movement resource:

Melissa Wood Health App. She has a wide variety of pre & post natal yoga/pilates videos and so much more.

Do something good for your spirit. Pregnant or not, the practices I shared are great exercises to incorporate into your daily routine. Whenever you feel disconnected, take some time to tune in, play some music, and stretch.
